On Implications of Demand Censoring in the Newsvendor Problem

چکیده
W consider a repeated newsvendor problem in which the decision maker (DM) does not have access to the underlying demand distribution. The goal of this paper is to characterize the implications of demand censoring on performance. To that end, we compare the benchmark setting in which the DM has access to demand observations to a setting in which the DM may only rely on sales data. We measure performance in terms of regret: the difference between the cumulative costs of a policy and the optimal cumulative costs with knowledge of the demand distribution. Through upper and lower bounds, we characterize the optimal magnitude of the worst-case regret for the two settings, enabling one to isolate the implications of demand censoring. In particular, the results imply that the exploration–exploitation trade-off introduced by demand censoring is fundamentally different in the continuous and discrete demand cases, and that active exploration plays a much stronger role in the latter case. We further establish that in the discrete demand case, the need for active exploration almost disappears as soon as a lost sales indicator (that records whether demand was censored or not) becomes available, in addition to the censored demand samples.

The Censored Newsvendor and the Optimal Acquisition of Information
This paper investigates the e ect of demand censoring on the optimal policy in newsvendor inventory models with general parametric demand distributions and unknown parameter values. We show that the newsvendor problem with observable lost sales reduces to a sequence of single-period problems while the newsvendor problem with unobservable lost sales requires a dynamic analysis. Using a Bayesian ...
متن کاملOptimal flexible capacity in newsboy problem under stochastic demand and lead-time
In this paper, we consider a newsvendor who is going to invest on dedicated or flexible capacity, our goal is to find the optimal investment policy to maximize total profit while the newsvendor faces uncertainty in lead time and demand simultaneously. As highlighted in literature, demand is stochastic, while lead time is constant. However, in reality lead time uncertainty decreases newsvendor's...
متن کاملOn the price of demand censoring in the newsvendor problem
We consider a repeated newsvendor problem where the decision-maker (DM) does not have access to the underlying distribution of discrete demand. We analyze three informational settings: i.) the DM observes realized demand in each period; ii.) the DM only observes realized sales ; and iii.) the DM observes realized sales but also a lost sales indicator that records whether demand was censored or ...
متن کاملObservation Bias: The Impact of Demand Censoring on Newsvendor Level and Adjustment Behavior
In an experimental newsvendor setting where 310 subjects make 50 repeated newsvendor decisions with the same known ex-ante parameters, we investigate three phenomena: Level behavior – the decision-maker’s average ordering tendency; adjustment behavior – the tendency to adjust period-to-period order quantities; and observation bias – the tendency to let the degree of demand feedback influence or...
متن کاملOn the Hardness of Inventory Management with Censored Demand Data
We consider a repeated newsvendor problem where the inventory manager has no prior information about thedemand, and can access only censored/sales data. In analogy tomultiarmed bandit problems, the manager needs to simultaneously “explore” and “exploit” with her inventory decisions, in order to minimize the cumulative cost. We make no probabilistic assumptions—importantly, independence or time ...
